At 90, Marine veteran Howard Benson thought he’d be buried in his family home in Kansas City. Instead, he was thrown out with two garbage bags and a walker.
The reason? $312.47 in unpaid property tax penalties.
A private developer had quietly bought the lien and flipped the title. Howard didn’t know until a deputy knocked on his door.
But within days, neighbors started a GoFundMe, which reached $58,000 in 48 hours. They used it to buy back his home, cover his medical bills, and give him a new roof literally and figuratively.
They said I was too old to matter, Howard said. But now, I know better.
