U.S. Calls South Korea’s Election ‘Fair’ But Slams China for Interference Attempts

The White House has officially recognized South Korea’s recent presidential election as “free and fair,” congratulating liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung on his win but not without taking a swipe at China.

In a press briefing, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “We congratulate the people of South Korea on their democratic commitment. However, we are concerned about evidence of Chinese disinformation campaigns and attempted cyber disruptions during the electoral process.”

Lee Jae-myung, who won on promises of reform and regional diplomacy, is considered more cautious toward North Korea and Beijing than his conservative predecessor. His administration is expected to balance relations with the U.S. while avoiding open conflict with China.

Beijing has denied any interference, calling the allegations “baseless and politically motivated.” However, cybersecurity firms in the U.S. and Japan have reported elevated hacking attempts targeting South Korean government servers in the weeks leading to the vote.

Observers say the election  and Washington’s firm support  is likely to reignite tensions in the region, especially around North Korea’s missile programs and Taiwan’s security.
