Ukraine Strikes Crimean Bridge with Underwater Explosives in Bold Covert Operation

In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian special forces carried out a highly coordinated underwater attack on the Crimean Bridge, dealing a symbolic and tactical blow to Russian military logistics. The strike, which occurred in the early hours of June 3, temporarily severed the main link between the Russian mainland and the annexed Crimean Peninsula.

According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the assault was executed using 1,100 kilograms of TNT strategically placed on underwater supports of the bridge. Ukrainian operatives had reportedly been preparing the sabotage for months, planting explosives in stages beneath the heavily guarded structure.

“This was one of the most complex underwater missions in modern warfare,” an anonymous Ukrainian intelligence source told local media. “The explosives were laid by our divers in phases, evading detection and outmaneuvering Russian naval patrols.”

The Crimean Bridge, also known as the Kerch Strait Bridge, is a 19-kilometer-long rail and road lifeline that has been essential for Russia’s military resupply routes into southern Ukraine and Crimea.

Following the detonation, Russian authorities swiftly closed the bridge, citing “security concerns.” Russian state media reported structural vibrations but claimed there were no casualties. The bridge reopened temporarily at 7:00 a.m., though strict traffic control remains in place.

Moscow was quick to accuse Ukraine of terrorism. Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agents announced the arrest of an alleged Ukrainian spy in Crimea they claimed was “coordinating the attack remotely.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov condemned the operation, saying:

“This act of sabotage was not only an attack on infrastructure, but on the unity of the Russian Federation.”

The international community reacted cautiously. While Western officials refrained from direct comment, analysts in Washington and London described the operation as a “turning point” in Ukraine’s strategy shifting from defensive resistance to surgical, high-risk strikes on Russian strongholds.

Military analyst Anatoly Kasyanov said:

“This is a new chapter. Ukraine has not only the will but now the capability to strike deep into Russian-controlled territory.”

This is not the first time the Crimean Bridge has been targeted. In October 2022, a truck bomb severely damaged its road span, leading to months of reconstruction. However, the current underwater attack marks the first known instance of a submerged demolition on this scale during the war.

As of press time, Ukrainian officials had neither confirmed nor denied whether additional sabotage missions are underway. Meanwhile, Russian military engineers have begun inspecting the bridge for structural damage.

With the war grinding into its third year, the destruction of vital infrastructure like the Crimean Bridge signals a dramatic escalation in Ukraine’s counter-offensive operations. Experts believe this strike could disrupt Russian troop movement and supply lines in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, potentially shifting momentum in Ukraine’s favor.

Whether this marks the beginning of a broader Ukrainian campaign into Crimea remains unclear. But one thing is certain: the war just got more unpredictable.
