In a highly controversial executive declaration, Donald Trump has announced that June will no longer be officially recognized as LGBTQ+ Pride Month. Instead, it will be known as “Title IX Month,” in honor of the landmark 1972 law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs.
“June is now about real equality,” Trump stated in a press release. “We’re honoring biological women who have fought and continue to fight for fairness in education and sports.”
The announcement, made through Truth Social and at a rally in Florida, sparked an immediate backlash from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, athletes, and civil rights organizations. Critics argue that the move is an attempt to erase years of progress made by the LGBTQ+ community and is part of a broader agenda to restrict transgender rights.

Title IX has increasingly become a political flashpoint in the debate over transgender athletes participating in women’s sports. Under Trump’s leadership, his administration reversed several Biden-era policies that expanded Title IX protections to include gender identity.
Supporters of the shift say the change re-centers the focus of the law on protecting cisgender women. “Title IX was about women and fairness, not ideology,” said Riley Gaines, a former NCAA swimmer and outspoken advocate for women’s sports.
Democratic lawmakers are reportedly preparing a legal challenge to the administration’s re-interpretation of Title IX, potentially setting the stage for a major court battle ahead of the 2026 midterms.
