Every month, millions of Americans are unknowingly making a financial mistake that’s quietly draining their bank accounts to the tune of over $600 per household.
The culprit? Subscription creep.
Streaming services, gym memberships, food delivery plans, cloud storage, credit monitoring, and even unused apps are racking up recurring charges that many people simply forget about. According to a 2025 report from Mint, the average U.S. adult now pays for 12 active subscriptions, and nearly 40% of those go unnoticed or underused.
“People underestimate how quickly these micro-payments add up,” says personal finance advisor Rachel Lin. “One $9.99 charge isn’t a big deal, but ten of them? That’s your grocery budget.”

Some of the worst offenders:
• Duplicate music streaming platforms
• Forgotten fitness or wellness apps
• Auto-renewing free trials
• Digital magazine bundles
Apps like Rocket Money and Trim have surged in popularity, helping users identify and cancel sneaky charges. But for millions, the damage is already done.
Experts advise doing a quarterly ‘subscription audit’, especially as cost-of-living pressures intensify. “This one habit can save you over $7,000 a year,” Lin says. “It’s the lowest-effort way to fight inflation.”
