In a dramatic turn of events, South Korea has elected a new president just weeks after the impeachment of former leader Yoon Suk Yeol, ending a period of political chaos and public disillusionment.
Conservative candidate and former military intelligence chief Park Soo-jin emerged victorious with 53% of the vote, defeating progressive rival Lee Hae-won. The snap election was triggered by Yoon’s removal from office on corruption charges tied to arms contracts and illegal surveillance programs.

“This is not just a change in leadership it’s a reset for South Korea,” President-elect Park said in her victory speech. “We will restore integrity and protect our democracy.”
Public protests erupted in April following the impeachment, shaking public trust in institutions. Park has promised to clean house, reform intelligence services, and improve ties with both the U.S. and North Korea.
The international community has praised South Korea’s peaceful transition. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated, “South Korea has proven once again that democracy can thrive even through crisis.”
