After months of silent diplomacy, Qatar has stepped into the international spotlight with a draft peace proposal aimed at ending the long-standing conflict between the Congolese government and M23 rebels in eastern DRC.
The draft agreement, presented this week in Doha, outlines a roadmap for ceasefire, regional autonomy talks, and reintegration of rebel fighters. It is the most comprehensive peace effort since the Nairobi Accords collapsed in 2022.

Both sides have agreed to review the terms and reconvene in 10 days. While cautious optimism abounds, the humanitarian cost of delay is evident: over 300,000 civilians remain displaced and living in dire conditions near Goma.
If the agreement holds, it could be a turning point not just for the DRC but for broader Great Lakes regional stability.
