A team of climate researchers drilling deep into thawing Arctic ice have discovered a new, unidentified virus and scientists say it has “no genetic match in any known database.”
The virus, pulled from a 27,000-year-old ice core in northern Siberia, is still active, according to researchers at a Swiss lab. Early experiments suggest it could potentially infect multiple organisms, raising alarm about possible “zombie pathogens” hidden in the melting permafrost.
“This isn’t just a climate issue anymore,” said Dr. Elise Marrot. “This could become a public health emergency if it mutates or escapes containment.”
