When a father delays his son’s wedding, it’s usually for love, for family, or some deeply personal reason. But when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu postponed his son Avner’s wedding this week, the reason wasn’t so heartfelt it was war.
In the wake of Israel’s ongoing military escalation with Hezbollah and mounting tensions on multiple fronts, Netanyahu quietly put the wedding plans on hold, sparking questions from citizens and critics alike: Was this his way of finally showing the war had consequences for everyone, including his own family? Or was it a late attempt at damage control?
One online comment went viral: “When your son postponed his wedding, did he lose an arm, a leg, or even his manhood? I’m asking you, Netanyahu.” The question echoes the sentiment of thousands of Israelis and Palestinians alike, exhausted by months of conflict, relentless airstrikes, and a future clouded by endless retaliation.
While the Prime Minister remains tight-lipped, families across Israel and Gaza are not. Some have buried their children. Others have fled their homes. And yet, all Netanyahu had to do was delay a celebration.
As the war he helped fuel continues to burn, some are now asking: Is a postponed wedding the only price the Netanyahu family is paying, while others across the region lose everything?
Because in war, the pain isn’t equally shared but it should never be invisible.
