Poland has elected conservative historian Karol Nawrocki as its new president in a closely contested run off vote against liberal opponent Rafał Trzaskowski.
With 51.4% of the vote, Nawrocki’s win marks a continued rightward tilt for the country, driven by a campaign focused on national identity, traditional values, and skepticism of the European Union. Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw, conceded late Sunday night, urging his supporters to remain hopeful for Poland’s democratic future.

Nawrocki, formerly the head of Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance, ran on a platform that promised to “preserve the soul of Poland” and reverse what he called “the cultural colonization from Brussels.”
International reactions have been mixed. EU officials expressed concern about Poland’s future direction, particularly in areas of judicial independence and LGBTQ rights, while conservative governments in Hungary and Italy praised the result.
The election turnout was high, with more than 65% of eligible voters participating one of the highest in the EU this year.
