In a moment of deep national tension, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has paused nationwide raids following massive protests and the first known domestic detention of a civilian by U.S. Marines.
The military detention, which occurred during a Los Angeles protest against ongoing ICE operations at hotels and agricultural sites, has triggered outrage among civil rights groups who claim the U.S. is inching toward authoritarianism.
Footage from the scene shows heavily armed Marines arresting a 26-year-old activist. The Pentagon has not issued a statement.
“This is a constitutional crisis,” said ACLU spokesperson Teresa Mason. “Military detention of civilians is the red line.”
