Late-night comedy turned political truth-teller this week when The Late Show host Stephen Colbert lit up social media with his latest monologue skewering President Donald Trump and in the same breath, heaped praise on Barack Obama.
“Trump tried to climb the stairs of Air Force One again,” Colbert joked. “He missed a step and democracy almost missed another beat.” The audience erupted in laughter as Colbert pulled up side-by-side clips Trump wobbling on the stairs, and Obama jogging up the same steps years earlier. “That’s the difference between a president and a pretender,” he quipped.
Colbert didn’t stop there. “Trump tweets threats at immigrants from the comfort of a golden toilet,” he said, “while Obama spent his presidency bringing dignity to the office even when facing the worst of it.”

The comedian’s viral moment now trending as #PretenderInChief has once again spotlighted the divide in leadership style between the two presidents. While Trump is often criticized for chaotic behavior, impulsive policies, and divisive rhetoric, Obama continues to be celebrated for calm decision-making, global respect, and moral clarity.
Colbert summed it up perfectly:
“Say what you want, but I’d take eight years of ‘Yes We Can’ over four years of ‘What the hell just happened?’ any day.”
Fans online agreed. One viewer commented: “Obama gave us hope. Trump gave us headaches.” Another wrote: “Colbert just said what the whole world is thinking.”
As 2024 election debates heat up, expect more comedians and maybe even politicians to keep calling out the contrast. Because sometimes the funniest lines reveal the harshest truths.
