In a landmark decision that could reshape the African Union’s strategic direction, Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf has been elected as the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The election, held behind closed doors at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, saw Youssouf win by a narrow margin after three rounds of voting.
Youssouf succeeds Moussa Faki Mahamat, who held the position for eight years. Analysts say his election signals a potential pivot in AU priorities from crisis management and conflict resolution to economic integration and institutional reform.
In his acceptance speech, Youssouf promised to “revive the African dream” and focus on continental self-reliance, peacebuilding, and digital transformation.

“African unity is not just an ideal it is a necessity,” Youssouf declared. “We must reduce our dependency on external donors, empower African institutions, and speak with one voice on global platforms.”
The new AU Commission Chair faces a challenging landscape. From the ongoing conflict in Sudan and insurgencies in the Sahel, to economic instability caused by global inflation and climate disasters, the continent’s challenges are immense. Still, Youssouf’s diplomatic experience and reputation for pragmatism have generated cautious optimism among member states.
He is expected to begin his term by appointing a new team of commissioners and outlining a 5-year strategic plan focused on governance, technology, and Pan-African trade.
