American Teens Drawn to Return to Vinyl And It’s Becoming a $1B Industry

It started as a trend, then became a habit and now it’s an economic force. Vinyl records are back in a big way, and the people driving the boom aren’t aging rock fans they’re teenagers.

Across the country, Gen Z is flooding into record stores, building collections, and even pressing their own limited albums. In 2024, vinyl sales topped $1 billion in the U.S. for the first time in decades surpassing CDs and closing in on digital downloads.

What’s behind the obsession? Many say it’s the physical feel, the crackling sound, and the ritual of flipping a record that digital streaming can’t replicate.

“I love that it’s not just music, it’s an experience,” said 17-year-old Layla from Michigan, who owns over 60 records.

Major retailers like Target and Walmart now have dedicated vinyl sections, and even TikTok influencers are curating “aesthetic turntable corners.”

Music labels are cashing in too, releasing vinyl versions of Taylor Swift, Travis Scott, and even video game soundtracks. For the first time in years, vinyl pressing plants are backlogged. In a digital world, analog has become cool and profitable.
