Fiery clash between environmental protection and immigration enforcement, two environmental groups filed a lawsuit on Friday to stop construction of a massive immigrant detention center deep in the Florida Everglades a controversial project already nicknamed by some Republicans as “Alligator Alcatraz.”
The lawsuit, filed in federal court, accuses Florida state officials of pushing the project forward without conducting the legally required ecological reviews. The detention facility, critics say, threatens one of the most fragile and biodiverse ecosystems in the United States, home to endangered species and a natural treasure unlike any other in North America.

Environmentalists argue that placing a detention center in the heart of the Everglades not only shows disregard for federal environmental protections, but also opens the door to irreversible ecological damage. “This isn’t just reckless,” one of the group’s attorneys said, “it’s destructive to both human rights and natural heritage.”
The facility, whose location has stirred fierce debate, is being planned as part of a broader expansion of Florida’s immigration detention infrastructure. But critics point out that this move prioritizes politics over preservation. “It’s dystopian,” said one activist. “You’re locking up people seeking safety, in a prison built inside one of the world’s most important wetlands.”
The nickname “Alligator Alcatraz” meant to frame the facility as tough on immigration has only added fuel to the outrage. Advocates and community leaders are calling for an immediate halt to the project and full transparency from the state.
As legal battles begin, all eyes turn to the courts and the wetlands. The big question now: will Florida push forward with building prisons on protected ground, or will the Everglades and the people caught in the crossfire get a reprieve?
