Baltimore’s iconic Inner Harbor turned a cloudy reddish hue this week after a diesel spill originating from Johns Hopkins Hospital’s storage facilities leaked an estimated 2,000 gallons of fuel into the water.
The spill was caused by an overfilled underground tank, prompting an emergency response from environmental protection crews and over 100 cleanup workers. Floating barriers and vacuum equipment have been deployed to contain the slick, which spread rapidly across the harbor’s eastern shoreline.

Local businesses and waterfront restaurants have expressed frustration at the disruption, with many canceling weekend events. So far, no injuries or wildlife fatalities have been reported, but the Maryland Department of the Environment has launched an investigation.
Officials have assured the public that the city’s drinking water is safe and unaffected. However, environmental groups are demanding greater transparency and accountability from the hospital and city officials moving forward.
