In a bold move escalating trade tensions, President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a sweeping 50% tariff on a wide range of products imported from the European Union. This unprecedented threat aims to pressure the EU amid ongoing disputes over trade practices and tariffs.
During a press briefing earlier today, the President also warned that iPhones assembled outside the United States could be subject to new tariffs, signaling potential changes in the trade treatment of major tech products. The announcement comes as part of the administration’s broader strategy to boost American manufacturing and address perceived trade imbalances.

“American workers have been taken advantage of for too long,” President Trump said. “If the European Union doesn’t negotiate fairer terms, we will hit them with heavy tariffs 50%, to be exact. And yes, that includes foreign-made iPhones. We want these products built right here in America.”
Industry analysts warn that such tariffs could trigger a tit-for-tat trade war with the EU, affecting millions of consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic. European officials have yet to issue a formal response but are expected to contest the tariffs at the World Trade Organization.

This aggressive stance also raises questions about the future of U.S. tech supply chains, as many components and assemblies for devices like the iPhone come from overseas, particularly in Asia and Europe.
