Peter Obi Advised to Partner with Yoruba Leader Sorowo or Another Yoruba Ally Instead of Relying on Northern VP

 

As Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election draws near, political strategists are urging Peter Obi to rethink his choice of running mate for better chances at victory. Instead of following the common practice of picking a Northern vice president, some influential voices believe Obi should join forces with a top Yoruba leader like Sorowo or another prominent Yoruba figure.

This strategy, they say, could unite the South East and South West regions, building a powerful coalition that transcends ethnic lines and presents a fresh alternative to the traditional North-South political balancing act.

Prominent Yoruba elder and outspoken critic of Bola Tinubu, Chief Adewale Akinlade, recently shared his advice with Dobblog:

“Peter Obi’s strength lies in creating genuine unity from the South. Aligning with Sorowo or a respected Yoruba leader would show real commitment to inclusive leadership, rather than defaulting to old political formulas.”

Akinlade, who has long voiced reservations about Tinubu’s influence in Yoruba politics, emphasized that tapping into Yoruba political goodwill could galvanize voters seeking change.
