Transparency is required by the federal government; all federal tertiary institutions must publish key data by May 31, 2025

 

In a bid to enhance transparency and accountability in higher education, the Federal Government has issued a directive requiring all federal tertiary institutions to publish critical institutional data on their official websites before May 31, 2025.  

Budget allocations, student population figures, and comprehensive funding details are among the information that must be disclosed. To ensure that stakeholders, including students, parents, policymakers, and the general public, have ready access to accurate data regarding how funds are utilized, institutions are required to provide comprehensive breakdowns of their financial allocations, according to the directive.

 The move is seen as a significant step towards fostering openness in the management of public funds and improving the overall governance of the nation’s educational institutions.

 Officials from the government emphasized that this initiative is a part of a larger effort to increase accountability in the public sector. “Transparency is the bedrock of trust,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education stated.

  "We aim to empower communities and ensure that resources allocated to education are used effectively to drive academic excellence and innovation by making these details public," the company states. The decision has elicited mixed reactions.  

Supporters argue that the policy will lead to improved management and performance in the education sector by holding institutions accountable for their expenditures.  However, critics warn that the rapid implementation may present difficulties, particularly for institutions with inadequate digital infrastructure. 

To ensure a smooth transition, the Ministry of Education has promised to provide technical support and capacity-building programs. Experts in the field point out that the disclosure of this information could also engender healthy competition among educational establishments, requiring them to optimize resource allocation and improve education quality. Meanwhile, student organizations and advocacy groups have welcomed the directive, urging for similar transparency measures to be adopted across other public sectors.
