Jihadists Resurge in Nigeria’s Northeast, Over 40 Feared Dead in Latest Attacks

A series of deadly assaults by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters has rocked Nigeria’s northeastern region, leaving at least 48 people dead in the past week. Security sources say the insurgents have intensified operations across remote communities in Borno and Adamawa states.

Eyewitnesses from Gwoza and Madagali reported late-night ambushes, burning of homes, and targeted killings. “They arrived in trucks, heavily armed, and started shooting sporadically,” said Mallam Audu, a resident who fled Madagali.

According to Nigerian military sources, the terrorist groups have increasingly deployed new warfare strategies, including roadside bombs and modified drone surveillance, posing fresh threats to counter-insurgency efforts.

In response, the Nigerian Army has appointed Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar to lead a reinvigorated security operation aimed at neutralizing the insurgents and regaining civilian trust. The move is part of an emergency restructuring of military leadership in the region.
