ACF Calls for Government Reforms to Tackle Insecurity and Strengthen Governance

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has emphasized the importance of refocusing on governance reforms as a means of addressing Nigeria's persistently widespread insecurity. The call to action came amid growing public anxiety over persistent security issues that have unsettled communities and undermined national development efforts.

The ACF emphasized in its most recent statement that weaknesses in governance and leadership are directly connected to the growing insecurity that exists in various regions of the country. “We must confront the reality that weak governance structures directly contribute to the rise of criminal activities and insurgency,” an ACF representative asserted.  The forum emphasized the importance of effective policy implementation, accountability, and decisive political action to address the causes of the security crisis. Governance as the Cornerstone for Stability

In its statement, the ACF emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy that improves institutional frameworks as well as strengthens security apparatus in order to foster transparency and good governance. This includes measures such as eradicating corruption, enhancing public service delivery, and developing community-based initiatives that empower local leaders.  According to the forum, these steps are vital to creating an environment where security forces can operate effectively and the trust of citizens in government institutions can be restored.

Political stakeholders and civil society groups have responded positively to the ACF’s remarks, acknowledging that sustainable security solutions require structural reforms rather than temporary measures.  The sentiment has been echoed by a number of lawmakers, who have urged the government to examine its policy frameworks and invest in robust governance reforms that address long-standing issues. The trend toward improved governance as a means of achieving long-term security enhancements is also supported by public opinion, as evidenced by discussions on social media and community forums. Next Steps and Government Commitments

The forum’s call has sparked discussions within government circles, with several officials indicating plans to evaluate current governance practices and implement reforms aligned with international best practices.  While the response from the executive branch remains cautious, there is a growing consensus that meaningful change can only come through coordinated efforts between government agencies, the private sector, and community leaders.

As Nigeria grapples with its security challenges, the ACF’s emphasis on governance offers a roadmap for long-term stability, reminding stakeholders that enduring peace can only be achieved through comprehensive reforms that address both the symptoms and underlying causes of insecurity.
