The family of Iryna Zarutska has made a heartbreaking yet symbolic decision: they will not return her body to Ukraine. Instead, they say she will be laid to rest in the United States the country she cherished most.
“After Iryna’s death, the embassy in Ukraine called and said, ‘We’ll help you bring her home,’” a family member explained. “But her family said no. They said she loved America. We’re going to bury her here.”
Zarutska’s story has touched many, not only because of the tragedy of her passing but also because of what it represents a woman who embraced the U.S. as her second home, and whose final wish, her loved ones say, would have been to remain in the country she admired.
Her burial in America has become more than just a personal choice; it’s a reflection of the deep bonds immigrants often form with their adopted homeland, even when their roots stretch far across the ocean.
As one mourner put it: “She may have been born in Ukraine, but America was where her heart lived.”
