Protests would spread from city to city, and sweeping new political changes would be proposed almost overnight.

Now compare that to other crimes where the racial or cultural dynamics are reversed. The reaction is not the same. Often, the story struggles to break into mainstream coverage at all. It may be labeled as a “local crime” or brushed aside as an “isolated incident.” In some cases, even the motives are quickly downplayed, leaving many to wonder: why isn’t this treated with the same urgency?

This imbalance isn’t just about headlines. It’s about the narratives we, as a society, choose to elevate and the ones we choose to ignore. When coverage depends more on identity politics than on the facts of the crime, the result is a double standard that erodes trust.
