Deadly Clashes in Nepal: 14 Killed as Police Open Fire on Protesters

What began as a protest over social media restrictions in Nepal has turned into one of the bloodiest political clashes the country has seen in years.

According to state TV, at least 14 people were killed when police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at young demonstrators who attempted to storm parliament.

The protesters, many of them students and activists, were demanding an end to the government’s controversial social media shutdown and calling out what they say is rampant corruption at the highest levels of power.

Witnesses describe a chaotic scene in Kathmandu as crowds surged toward the gates of parliament, chanting against Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s government. Police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, but the situation spiraled out of control, leading to deadly consequences.

The government has defended its crackdown, saying the protest turned violent and threatened national security. But opposition leaders and rights groups are condemning the bloodshed, accusing authorities of using excessive force against unarmed citizens.
