Now that Nepal has lifted the ban and promised dialogue with its restless younger generation, many are asking: Could something like this ever happen in the United States?

On the surface, the answer feels like a clear “no.” America’s First Amendment protects freedom of speech and expression more strongly than almost any other country. A government-imposed social media blackout during protests would trigger immediate lawsuits and likely be struck down in court.

But here’s where it gets complicated:

• App bans are already real. TikTok has been banned on government devices, and lawmakers have floated nationwide restrictions citing national security threats.

• Platform pressure exists. U.S. officials regularly call on platforms like X, Meta, and YouTube to remove “dangerous” or “misleading” content. While not an outright ban, it raises questions about how free the platforms really are.

• Infrastructure control matters. Unlike Nepal, the U.S. government doesn’t directly control internet access. That makes a full shutdown extremely difficult but not impossible if emergency powers were ever invoked.

So, could America pull the plug on social media during mass protests? Legally and practically, it’s unlikely. But with rising debates over censorship, TikTok bans, and Big Tech influence, the question feels less far-fetched than it once did.

And one thing is clear: if any administration ever tried, it wouldn’t silence people. It would likely ignite even larger protests across the country.
