When news broke that U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for “peace talks” on Ukraine, the world took notice. But perhaps no one responded more sharply than Ukraine’s own President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
In a statement that carried the weight of two years of war, Zelenskiy declared:
“Ukrainians will not give their land to occupiers.”
The timing of Trump’s meeting with Putin set against the backdrop of ongoing Russian strikes, civilian casualties, and destroyed infrastructure has raised eyebrows both in Kyiv and across global capitals. For Ukraine, this is not just another round of political maneuvering; it’s about survival, sovereignty, and the sacrifice of thousands of lives.
Zelenskiy’s defiant words reflect the mood in much of Ukraine today: exhausted by war, but unwilling to bow. For many citizens, the idea of negotiating territory is not a show of peace it’s an insult to those who have already paid the ultimate price.
Meanwhile, analysts are questioning whether Trump’s talks with Putin will genuinely seek an end to the war or whether they could pressure Ukraine into concessions it’s not willing to make.

As one Kyiv resident told reporters: “Peace without justice is surrender. And we will not surrender.”
For now, the world waits. Trump and Putin may sit at the table, but Zelenskiy’s message is already clear: Ukraine’s borders are not for sale.
