The DOJ’s letter accused Texas of unconstitutional racial gerrymandering, demanding an immediate response. Instead of fighting back, state Republicans rushed through a new map that could net them up to five more GOP-controlled seats in Congress. Abbott proudly declared it “One Big Beautiful Map,” promising Trump he had delivered.
Critics say this is part of a bigger, more troubling strategy. Over the summer, Trump’s Justice Department has been using lawsuits or just the threat of them to strong-arm states into giving him wins. Meanwhile, Democratic states like California are retaliating with their own redistricting plans, setting the stage for a nationwide political map war before 2026.
