President Donald Trump has once again put immigration front and center, calling for a massive expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Trump says adding more agents is necessary to “secure the border” and crack down on what he calls a “national security crisis.”
But critics are warning that this move could do more harm than good. Civil rights groups argue that ICE has already faced accusations of abuse, poor oversight, and unnecessary detentions. Expanding the force, they say, could lead to even more human rights concerns.

“More ICE agents won’t fix America’s immigration system,” one advocacy group said. “It will only create fear and instability in immigrant communities.”
The debate comes at a time when border policy is once again shaping the political landscape ahead of the 2026 elections. For Trump’s base, this hardline stance could be a rallying cry. For his critics, it’s yet another sign of policies they see as extreme and unsafe.
