The high-stakes Alaska summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin ended Friday with no agreement to resolve or even pause Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Both leaders insisted the talks were “productive,” but no breakthrough emerged after hours of discussions. Trump did signal he wants Russia and Ukraine to push directly toward a full peace agreement rather than a temporary cease-fire, echoing Putin’s long-standing preference.
The lack of progress will likely frustrate European leaders, who have pressed Washington to take a harder line on Moscow. Instead, Trump confirmed he has no immediate plans to impose fresh penalties on China for continuing to purchase Russian oil, saying “now is not the time” for further economic escalation.
For now, Ukraine remains on edge as the fighting drags on and international diplomacy struggles to deliver results.
