In a surprising twist, the Trump administration launched its first official TikTok account on Tuesday even as the fate of the Chinese-owned social media app in the United States remains up in the air.
The debut video features President Trump himself, declaring: “Every day I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation. I am your voice.” The clip was posted with the caption: “America we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?”
The move comes at a complicated moment for TikTok. For months, its China-based parent company, ByteDance, has been under pressure from Washington to divest or sell the app due to national security concerns. Trump has already extended the deadline for a potential ban three times, most recently to September 17.
In a June statement, TikTok praised the administration’s willingness to work toward a deal, noting that more than 170 million U.S. users and 7.5 million American businesses rely on the platform. The new account featuring Trump front and center could signal that his administration is leaning toward allowing TikTok to remain in the U.S., at least for now.

Still, questions loom: will ByteDance agree to divest, or will Trump push ahead with a ban? For now, the president’s presence on the platform he once threatened to shut down is sending a mixed but unmistakable message TikTok may still have a future in America.
