Mark Warren, an Anchorage local, was minding his business earlier this month when a group of Russian reporters spotted him on the street riding an old Soviet-era motorcycle. Intrigued, they flagged him down on August 9 and began asking questions about the vintage machine.
Warren explained that the bike was an old Ural a motorcycle brand whose factory was originally founded in 1941 in Soviet Russia. He admitted that keeping it running had become more and more difficult, especially since the modern-day production is now tied to Ukraine.
That short street interview quickly went viral in Russia. And apparently, it reached the Kremlin.
To Warren’s absolute shock, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent him a brand-new motorcycle as a gift following his recent summit in Anchorage.
“I’m speechless, it’s amazing. Thank you very much,” Warren said after receiving the surprise.
While the moment has left many stunned, it also highlights just how strange and unpredictable politics and personal stories can collide in unexpected ways. One day you’re riding a vintage Soviet bike, and the next, you’re getting a brand-new one directly from Putin.
