Denmark Summons U.S. Diplomat After Report Ties Trump Allies to Covert Ops in Greenland

The Arctic is suddenly back in the political spotlight and this time, it’s not about melting ice caps. Denmark has summoned the top U.S. diplomat in Copenhagen after a bombshell investigation claimed that at least three people with ties to former President Donald Trump have been running covert influence operations in Greenland.

Greenland, the semi-autonomous Arctic territory long coveted by Trump who once floated the idea of buying it is again at the center of geopolitical intrigue. According to Denmark’s public broadcaster DR, anonymous sources in Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S. say these operatives have been working behind the scenes to sway public opinion and quietly shape political alignments in Trump’s favor.

One alleged operative reportedly compiled lists of pro- and anti-Trump Greenlanders, while others attempted to build relationships with local politicians, business leaders, and community figures. The aim, sources believe, was to undermine Denmark’s influence and fracture Greenland’s ties with Copenhagen potentially clearing the way for stronger U.S. leverage in the Arctic.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen did not mince words, warning that any attempt to meddle in the Kingdom’s internal affairs would be “unacceptable.” He confirmed that the U.S. chargé d’affaires has been summoned for urgent talks.

The Danish intelligence service PET also weighed in, stating it has long assessed Greenland to be a target for foreign influence operations particularly because of its strategic location and natural resources. PET said attempts often exploit local disagreements or amplify divisions between Greenland and Denmark.

For Greenland, which has historically struggled with debates over autonomy and resource management, the revelations only add to existing tensions. And for Washington, the reports risk further straining ties with one of its closest NATO allies.

Trump himself has not commented on the claims. But the controversy underscores just how much the world’s icy frontier has become a stage for political power plays where influence, not territory, is the prize.
