President Donald Trump declared: “As President, I’ve ended the radical left’s war on faith, and we’re once again protecting religious freedom like never before in our country! We’re getting rid of the Johnson Amendment that didn’t let the pastors and ministers and everybody speak about politics.”
The comment, made during a recent campaign-style appearance, is being hailed by Trump’s base as a bold defense of religion and sharply criticized by others as a dangerous erosion of church-state separation.
At the heart of the controversy is the Johnson Amendment, a 1954 tax law that prohibits churches and nonprofit organizations from directly endorsing political candidates. Though rarely enforced, it has long been a point of contention for conservatives who say it muzzles pastors and faith leaders.

Trump has made weakening the amendment a key part of his message to evangelicals, often claiming he “destroyed” it though legally, it still remains on the books.
“This is about restoring the voice of the church,” Trump said to roaring applause. “No more silence. No more fear.”
Critics, however, argue that what Trump is pushing is less about freedom of faith and more about turning the pulpit into a political weapon.
“Faith leaders are supposed to guide the soul, not campaign from the altar,” said Rev. Jamie Collins of Faith United Church. “What he’s doing is opening the floodgates for churches to become political machines.”
Still, for millions of conservative Christians, Trump’s vow to “protect faith” has cemented him as their champion and his messaging around religion and politics is once again becoming a core part of his 2024 narrative.
But as the line between faith and politics continues to blur, the nation is left asking: who truly benefits when pastors start preaching politics?
