U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will soon impose a 10% tariff on all imports from BRICS countries. Speaking during a cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump said,
“Anybody that’s in BRICS is getting a 10% charge pretty soon. If they’re a member of BRICS, they’re going to have to pay a 10% tariff… and they won’t be a member long.”
The BRICS group made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa recently held its annual summit in Brazil, with growing influence and expanded membership. Trump accused the bloc of trying to weaken the U.S. dollar and said the tariff is a response to what he called “anti-American” economic policies.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded sharply, saying the world “does not need an emperor” and criticized Trump’s attempt to use trade as a weapon.
Other BRICS leaders, including officials from China and South Africa, also expressed concern, warning that such tariffs could hurt global trade and increase tensions.
The tariff does not yet have a confirmed start date, but Trump emphasized it would happen “pretty soon.”
If implemented, the 10% tariff would apply to all goods imported into the U.S. from BRICS member nations, potentially increasing prices on a wide range of products and escalating global trade tensions.
