Florida is boiling not just from the summer heat, but from political fire. This week, State Representative Angie Nixon made headlines after boldly accusing Donald Trump of building “modern-day concentration camps” in the heart of the Everglades.
Her remarks came in response to the opening of a new migrant detention center, chillingly nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” a massive facility that could hold up to 5,000 detainees. The site, heavily fortified with barbed wire and concrete, was unveiled by Trump himself as part of his controversial immigration crackdown.
“This isn’t about safety or law and order,” Nixon told CNN. “This is about disappearing people from our communities and dehumanizing them. It’s modern-day concentration camps.”
The comments have sparked a political firestorm, with critics backing Nixon’s concerns and conservatives defending the center as a “necessary deterrent.” Supporters of Trump say the facility is designed to reduce illegal immigration and restore border control, but opponents warn it’s a dangerous return to some of the darkest policies in U.S. history.
Civil rights groups, Native American tribes, and environmental activists are also speaking out, claiming the detention center was rushed through without proper legal or environmental review.
Trump, however, remains defiant. During a tour of the facility, he declared, “This is just the beginning. We’re taking back control.”
The debate over immigration, human rights, and the future of America’s moral compass is now front and center and it’s playing out deep in the Florida swamps.
