The United States and Canada have restarted trade negotiations after Canada decided to cancel its digital services tax that targeted large U.S. tech companies like Google, Amazon, and Meta.
The tax had caused tension between the two countries, and the U.S. had warned that it could respond with tariffs. Now that Canada has dropped the tax, both countries are moving forward with talks, aiming to reach a new agreement by July 21.
The talks will cover important issues like agriculture, auto trade, and clean energy. Officials from both sides say they are hopeful that the discussions will lead to a fair and strong trade deal.
The decision to restart talks comes just as former President Donald Trump announced he will not extend a global tariff pause beyond July 9, meaning that any country without a trade deal could face new U.S. import taxes.
Markets have responded positively to the news, and investors are watching closely as the two countries work toward an agreement.
