In a move sparking fierce debate across the country, President Trump’s newly proposed federal budget includes a massive 15% cut to the Department of Education.
The proposal reallocates funds toward vocational training, school-choice programs, and military education pipelines. Secretary of Education Katherine Mills defended the cuts as “realignment for relevance,” emphasizing the need to focus on skilled trades and cybersecurity training.
Teachers’ unions and education nonprofits have condemned the proposal. “This is a direct assault on public education,” said NEA President Alicia Franklin. “We cannot build a future by defunding learning.”
