Trump Orders Repatriation of Mistakenly Deported Immigrant Held in El Salvador’s Notorious Mega Prison

In a dramatic twist to U.S. immigration policy enforcement, former President Donald Trump’s administration has repatriated a man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador and held in one of the country’s most notorious prisons. The man, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, was reportedly wrongfully expelled from the United States and detained at the CECOT “mega-prison,” a high-security facility infamous for housing some of Central America’s most violent gang members.

Abrego Garcia, 36, was deported earlier this year amid an aggressive crackdown on undocumented immigrants. However, federal authorities now confirm that he had a valid asylum claim pending at the time of his removal, sparking outrage from immigrant rights advocates and legal experts.

Following growing pressure and an international outcry over the mishandling of his case, Garcia was returned to the U.S. on Thursday under special escort. However, instead of being freed, he was immediately taken into custody and charged with “transporting unauthorized immigrants,” according to federal prosecutors.

A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson said the repatriation was “part of a broader effort to correct procedural mistakes made in high-priority cases,” while insisting the new charges stem from unrelated activities discovered during a reopened investigation.

Garcia reportedly endured extreme conditions inside El Salvador’s CECOT prison, a massive complex designed to hold over 40,000 inmates many of them linked to the infamous MS-13 and Barrio 18 gangs. Human rights groups describe the facility as a “punitive fortress,” where detainees are routinely stripped of due process and basic dignity.

In a brief statement through his attorney, Garcia said he was “locked up with murderers and tortured daily,” and had “no idea if the U.S. even remembered I existed.” His lawyer is now pushing for the new charges to be dropped, calling them “retaliatory” and “deeply unjust.”

The incident has sparked renewed debate over immigration enforcement tactics under Trump’s renewed influence. Critics accuse his administration of prioritizing showy deportation numbers over due process and justice.

“This is what happens when you treat immigration as a numbers game instead of a human issue,” said Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA). “A man with a pending asylum case was dumped into one of the worst prisons in the world, and now you want to criminalize him further?”

Conservatives, however, argue that the system worked as intended by catching illegal activities post-deportation. “The fact that he was later implicated in transporting illegals shows DHS was right to keep him off the streets,” said Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO).

Garcia’s legal team is expected to file a motion to dismiss the charges next week, citing procedural violations and “trauma-induced impairment.” Immigration attorneys say the case could become a legal landmark, especially if Garcia seeks compensation for wrongful deportation and imprisonment abroad.

As America heads toward the November elections, the case is already fueling fiery exchanges between candidates over border security, due process, and the limits of presidential immigration power.
