President Donald Trump couldn’t hide his grin when a reporter asked him whether he had outsmarted the financial world with his controversial tariff strategy a plan critics long claimed would spark inflation or even recession.
The moment came during a press event where a journalist cited a surprising shift in tone from Torsten Sløk, chief economist at Apollo Global Management. Sløk, once a skeptic, recently admitted Trump’s tariff approach might have been smarter than anyone thought.
“Mr. President, a leading global economist just did a one-eighty and says your tariff plan you may have outsmarted everybody with it. What is your message?” the reporter asked.

Trump’s response was pure Trump.
“I love this. I love this question. This is the favorite. This is the best question I’ve ever been asked,” he said, beaming. “Because I’ve been going through abuse for years on this… And now we’re taking in hundreds of billions of dollars, no inflation whatsoever.”
When the reporter pressed further asking what he’d say to critics who believe the tariff policy hurt the economy Trump didn’t hold back:
“I think they should go back to business school,” he said, laughing. “It’s so obvious. We’re taking in billions and billions of dollars from China and a lot of other countries.”
Trump’s remarks came on the same day Wall Street delivered more good news: The S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit all-time closing highs, signaling renewed investor confidence and sending a clear message that the economy may be faring better than many expected.
Whether or not the praise from economists and the strong market rally vindicate Trump’s long-defended tariff strategy is still up for debate but one thing’s for sure: he’s finally enjoying the applause.
