In a harrowing report released this morning, UNICEF has confirmed that sexual violence against children including infants is being used systematically in Sudan’s ongoing civil conflict. The agency described the trend as a “deliberate and organized tactic of war” meant to terrorize communities and erase cultural identity.
The report, based on hundreds of interviews with survivors and aid workers, details horrifying accounts of sexual assaults on girls as young as 8 months old. Many of these attacks took place in refugee camps, schools, and even medical centers.

“These crimes are not isolated acts of brutality. They are part of a calculated strategy,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “There are credible indications that armed groups are using rape as a weapon of war, including targeting children to break the spirit of entire communities.”
The report has sparked outrage across Africa and beyond, with calls for international accountability. The United Nations Security Council is expected to convene an emergency session to address the atrocities, and the International Criminal Court (ICC) has opened a preliminary investigation.
Meanwhile, humanitarian conditions in Sudan continue to deteriorate. Over 1.5 million people have been displaced, and access to food, water, and medical care is critically limited in conflict zones. Aid agencies are calling for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted access to affected areas.
