Barack Obama isn’t holding back anymore. At a recent event, the former president gave a serious warning: American democracy is in danger, and time is running out to fix it.
We’re seeing the rise of leaders who don’t respect the rule of law, Obama said. When that happens, democracy doesn’t die overnight. It crumbles slowly while people aren’t paying attention.
He pointed to recent threats against judges, attacks on the free press, and the growing divide between truth and conspiracy.
What worries me most, he said, is that people have stopped caring. When you stop caring, you lose your voice. And when you lose your voice, someone else will speak for you and not always with your best interests in mind.
Obama called on Americans to vote, to stay informed, and to stand up for each other. If we want to keep this democracy, he said, we’re going to have to fight for it peacefully, but powerfully.
His message was clear: Don’t sit this one out.
