Myanmar is once again descending into chaos as renewed clashes erupt in Shan and Karen states following the breakdown of fragile peace negotiations. Ethnic resistance groups have regained territory from the junta, prompting the military to launch sweeping airstrikes and ground assaults.
Thousands of civilians are fleeing the violence, which has displaced over 300,000 people this year alone. Humanitarian groups report a growing crisis as access to aid is cut off in many contested areas.
“The junta is waging war on its own people,” said a spokesperson from the Karen Human Rights Group.
With no political resolution in sight, the conflict threatens to spiral into one of Southeast Asia’s worst humanitarian disasters in decades.
