The streets of Colombia are filled with grief and rage following the assassination of María José Estupiñán, better known as “La Mona,” a 22-year-old influencer and mother of one. She was fatally shot outside her home in Cúcuta on June 6 in what police are calling a “targeted hit.”
La Mona, who had amassed over 200,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram, was known for her makeup tutorials, relatable mom content, and powerful messages on female empowerment. Her murder marks yet another tragedy in Colombia’s growing epidemic of femicide.
Surveillance footage shows two gunmen approaching on motorcycles and opening fire before speeding off. Authorities say it was not a robbery. La Mona had previously spoken about receiving threats but no one imagined it would come to this.
The hashtags #NiUnaMenos (Not One Less) and #JusticiaParaLaMona have taken over social media in Colombia and other Latin countries, with users posting their outrage and solidarity.
“We are tired of burying our sisters. Colombia, wake up,” one activist wrote.
Public protests have broken out in Bogotá, Medellín, and Cúcuta, with demonstrators demanding that femicide be declared a national emergency. Influencers across South America have paused their content in mourning and posted black-screen tributes in La Mona’s name.
Her 4-year-old son is now in the care of her mother.
