More than 20,000 residents were evacuated overnight in Cologne, Germany, following the discovery of multiple unexploded World War II bombs during routine construction work. Authorities say it is the largest evacuation in the city since WWII itself.
The bombs were found in a densely populated district while workers dug foundations for a new apartment complex. Bomb disposal experts were immediately dispatched to the scene, and a 2-kilometer exclusion zone was enforced.

Police used loudspeakers and emergency text alerts to move residents to nearby shelters. The defusal operation lasted more than 12 hours, with all devices successfully neutralized without incident.
Germany is no stranger to WWII-era bomb discoveries, but the scale of this operation has reignited debates about the dangers still buried beneath the country’s modern infrastructure.
