It was 102°F outside a Phoenix gas station when Maria Valdez noticed two barefoot children sitting by the dumpster. She offered them bottled water and chips from the shelf only to be reprimanded by her store manager.
“I was told it’s against policy to give out store goods without payment even if they’re starving kids,” she said.
Maria quit on the spot. “Those were just kids,” Maria says. “And I’ll never regret feeding them.”
