The U.S. House of Representatives turned into a political battleground overnight as lawmakers clashed over a sweeping bill that could reshape the nation’s tax and immigration landscape. Pushed aggressively by former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, the legislation seeks to extend the 2017 tax cuts while introducing deep spending cuts to federal welfare programs.
The bill’s most controversial elements include significant reductions in food assistance, Medicaid coverage, and housing support, which Republicans claim will reduce the national deficit and “rebuild the American economy.” Trump loyalists have called it a return to “fiscal sanity.”
Democrats, however, are firing back, accusing Republicans of launching a “war on the working class” and warning that millions of vulnerable Americans could be left behind. “This isn’t economic reform it’s an attack on everyday people trying to survive,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD).

Meanwhile, tensions soared on Capitol Hill as both parties held backroom meetings and late-night strategy sessions. The vote on the bill is expected to take place later today, with the outcome too close to call. A few moderate Republicans have expressed concern over the bill’s aggressive cuts, leaving House Speaker Mike Johnson scrambling to secure enough support.
As the country watches closely, the question remains: will this bill become law or will it unravel Trump’s economic legacy?
