A federal judge has ordered the release of Kseniia Petrova, a Russian scientist working at Harvard University, after ruling that U.S. customs had “no legal or factual reason” to revoke her visa.
Petrova was detained last week at Boston Logan Airport after returning from a climate science conference. Customs officials canceled her visa on suspicion, but the court found no evidence of wrongdoing.
“This detention was baseless,” said Judge Raymond Fletcher. “There was no cause under immigration or criminal law.”

Petrova is a respected researcher in environmental science and has worked at Harvard for over six years. The university called her detention “unjust” and welcomed the ruling.
Civil rights groups say the case reflects growing concerns about profiling foreign academics, especially those from Russia.
Petrova thanked the court and said she looks forward to returning to her research.
