Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been elected mayor of Davao City while detained at The Hague, awaiting trial for alleged crimes against humanity. Duterte secured a significant majority, highlighting his enduring political influence in his hometown.

The Commission on Elections stated that Duterte could still be proclaimed as mayor in absentia, even while in detention. The Department of the Interior and Local Government will decide if Duterte has the capability to fulfill his role while detained overseas. Duterte’s son, Sebastian Duterte, is expected to manage city affairs during his incarceration.
