Hundreds of Baltimore public school teachers staged a mass walkout on Monday, demanding immediate payment of long-promised bonuses and a reversal of recent budget cuts that they say are crippling the education system.
The protest, organized by the Baltimore Teachers Coalition (BTC), saw educators gather outside City Hall, chanting “Pay us what we’re owed!” and “Students deserve better!” The walkout affected nearly 40 schools, leaving thousands of students without classes for the day.
“This isn’t just about money,” said Alicia Rodriguez, a high school science teacher. “It’s about respect. We are tired of being the last priority.”
The controversy centers around $1,500 retention bonuses that were promised during last year’s contract negotiations but never delivered. Teachers also say recent cuts have led to oversized classrooms, reduced support staff, and limited supplies.

In response, Baltimore City Public Schools issued a brief statement: “We are working closely with the union to resolve outstanding financial matters and remain committed to a resolution.”
But that’s not enough for many teachers, who say years of neglect and broken promises have reached a breaking point. Parents, too, are showing support, with many joining teachers on the picket lines.
“They’re doing this for our kids,” said mother of three, Jasmine Daniels. “I support them 100 percent.”

City officials are expected to hold an emergency session later this week to address the crisis.
